- The animals are already dead though, so why not eat them?
-This is a great question and it makes sense why people would ask this question. What’s important to remember here is not whether or not the animal is dead already, but not cultivating a life where we are contributing to future suffering. Yes, there are many animals who have already been killed and their body parts are in your grocery store, but there are many who haven’t been killed. It’s all about supply and demand, if everyone stopped buying animal products tomorrow the demand would plummet. Therefore there isn’t a need for them to keep spending money to produce more product. Lower demand = Less production = Less Suffering and Less Death. - Can one person really make a difference?
-YES! A MILLION TIMES YES! There are lots of articles out there that talk about the number of animals saved per year by people who are vegetarian and vegan. You sleep better at night, you are healthier and often the people around you become interested to learn more about your lifestyle and it starts spreading to the people around you! - I went vegetarian for a week and I didn’t feel good, does that mean I didn’t get enough protein?
-So I hear this a lot. People going vegetarian for a super short period of time and not feeling good. I’m not surprised. When you start a new healthy regimen, your body can have detox symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, acne, gas, bloating, etc. There are two points I want to make here the first being- If you’ve been consuming animal products for your entire life (lets say your my age-24) and then you stop consuming animal products you have to understand that you’re body has been used to animal products for 24 years of your life, so you can’t expect your body to change so rapidly when it has so many years of animals products. Patience is key. The second point is, adjusting to a new lifestyle especially a new diet, is like starting a fitness program when you haven’t worked out in a while, at first it sucks and then you get stronger and start to feel better. Be patient, move through your detox symptoms and keep trucking. It’s about the animals. - Is veganism really healthy?
-Veganism/Plant-Based Diet is considered one of the healthiest diets because of the abundance of fruits and vegetables one is consuming on a healthy vegan diet. Trust me, you can be overweight, you can be unhealthy as a vegan and you can be a junk food vegan if you don’t eat the right things. They make a vegan version of everything, doesn’t mean it’s health though! If you want more information around the science behind a healthy vegan diet I suggest watching some documentaries on Netflix, and buying The China Study to read. - How do you get protein?/What do you eat?
-This is one of the most common questions I get. So I’m going to make it short and sweet. Protein is in every fruit or vegetable, so if your eating them in abundance along with rice, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds you will have more than enough protein. As for what I eat, I eat everything! Just imagine me replacing meat with extra veggies, fruit or beans/legumes. - Do you take supplements?
-Originally, I wasn’t taking supplements because I didn’t know much about them or why I needed them. People kept talking to me about B12 and I would always brush it off my shoulders. Currently, I do take supplements but this is not just because I am vegan, this is also because I have a stomach condition. So for veganism all I take is a B-Vitamin Complex. B-vitamins are important for SO many functions in our body and it also ensures I get my B12. Meat eaters-you may be low in B12 so consider supplementing anyway. For my stomach condition I take probiotics everyday, and then I have some additional supplements I take on an as needed basis. The Standard America Diet is terrible, therefore we could all use some supplements to help us fill in nutritional gaps-especially if you don’t eat an abundance of fruit and vegetables everyday. - What made you want to be vegan?
-Animal welfare/ethics was my initial step in wanting to be a vegetarian many years ago. I went back and forth in college and then finally when I started Yoga Teacher Training I decided to go vegetarian and never looked back. Honestly, I never planned on going vegan originally but then I saw the horrors of the dairy industry and I couldn’t bear to support that so I went vegan! - Do you drink alcohol?
-Yes. Occasionally, I drink alcohol. Many vegans don’t, many vegans do. There are beers, wine, and other alcohols that are vegan and that are not. This website will let you know if what you’re drinking is vegan! http://www.barnivore.com/
